West country Family pub of 2009
Times may be tough for the UK’s pub trade, but the The Maypole at Thurloxton, Taunton has cause for celebration after reaching the finals of the industry’s ‘Oscars’, the Great British Pub Awards, 2 years running. This year bringing home West country Green pub of 2010!
James and Jo Lowe have much to be proud of already. The Great British Pub Awards, run by drinks industry ‘bible’ the Morning Advertiser, are the ultimate accolade in pub retailing and competition for a finals placing is intense. Following a ‘paper’ judging and a visit from an industry expert, the The Maypole has been named as the Best Green Pub in the West country. Along with the seven other regional finalists, James and Jo Lowe will be waited with bated breath for the national winner to be revealed at a glittering Awards ceremony in London on 9th September.
Paul Charity, editor of the Morning Advertiser, said, “It is heartening to find such a wonderful success story when there has been little good news about pubs recently. This is proof that talented, hard-working landlords and landladies can still attract customers wanting to experience the unique atmosphere of the Great British Pub. They thoroughly deserve this public recognition of their achievement.”
The judges were impressed with the relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere James and Jo have created in the pub, commenting, “A good family pub needs not only to meet the needs of young children, but also offer their parents a great pub experience. It is to the pub’s credit that they have managed both so successfully.

ABOUT THE MAYPOLE INN
Originally named the Star Inn, the Maypole Inn dates back to 1880, when it was under the ownership of William Day. The Star Inn was originally a Cider House and remained so until the mid 1970's when The Green Dragon, the Public house in Thurloxton, closed. The pub remained The Star until the mid 1990's, when the name was changed to The Maypole Inn. |
